We are always looking for innovative ways to prepare our learners for adulthood. While traditional employer encounters and work experience remain incredibly valuable, we also recognise that every learner's journey is different. That's why we are committed to exploring creative approaches that make careers education accessible, engaging and meaningful for all.

We are really keen to continue to explore how we can use VR to strengthen our curriculum, and this term, learners at The Gateway School, Tiffield, took part in an exciting pilot project with Immersive Pathways, using virtual reality (VR) technology to experience careers in mechanical engineering and healthcare. Bringing Careers to Life

Through a series of immersive simulations, Key Stage 3 and 4 learners stepped into the shoes of professionals working in a variety of industries.

Using VR headsets, learners had the opportunity to:

• Operate a forklift truck in a warehouse environment.
• Use engineering tools to complete practical tasks.
• Experience performing keyhole knee surgery within a healthcare setting.

The technology created realistic, hands-on experiences that allowed learners to explore different careers in a safe, engaging and supportive environment.

Alongside the practical activities, the workshops also introduced learners to the wide variety of career pathways available within Northamptonshire's construction, engineering and healthcare sectors. They explored progression routes, discovered local employment opportunities and developed a greater understanding of the skills required within each profession.

Making Careers Education Accessible

At Creating Tomorrow Trust, we understand that meaningful work experience looks different for every learner.

For some young people, visiting a workplace is the perfect next step. For others, particularly those who may not yet feel ready for an external placement, immersive technology can provide an excellent starting point.

Virtual reality offers learners the opportunity to experience workplaces, understand job roles and build confidence before taking their next steps into employer engagement or work experience.

It is not intended to replace real-life experiences, but instead complements them by providing learners with a safe and familiar environment in which to explore new possibilities, ask questions and develop aspirations.

As we continue to support the Government's Modern Work Experience agenda, approaches like this demonstrate how technology can help ensure careers education is inclusive and accessible to every learner.
