We were thrilled to be invited to speak at the UK Warehousing Association (UKWA) Conference this term, focusing on People and Purpose: Unlocking Inclusive Talent Across Your Organisation.
This event brought together industry leaders, employers, and advocates for inclusive recruitment to discuss how organisations can tap into hidden talent pools, bridge skills gaps, and build loyal, high-performing workforces.
Our Community and Employer Engagement Business Partner was proud to take part on the panel, alongside a wealth of experienced voices, including our very own trustee, Lawrence Watson, sharing perspectives from Amazon. The opportunity to contribute to such a high-level discussion and to connect with other passionate professionals was invaluable.
One of the key points that resonated with the audience was:
“Most employers aren’t doing anything wrong intentionally, they are designing recruitment for an out-of-date and fictional ‘average’ person.”
This insight sparked engaging discussion about how outdated recruitment practices often unintentionally exclude talented individuals, particularly those with SEND or neurodiverse backgrounds. Another highlight from the session was:
“Inclusive recruitment isn’t charity; it’s a workforce strategy.”
This statement really struck a chord with attendees, highlighting that making recruitment inclusive is not about doing a favour, but about building smarter, more resilient organisations that can access untapped talent.
The panel explored practical steps employers can take to become more inclusive, including reviewing job descriptions, adapting interview techniques, and creating workplace environments where diversity thrives. Our discussions emphasised that inclusive recruitment can unlock potential, improve retention, and bring fresh perspectives to the workforce.
This was not only a fantastic platform to share knowledge, but also an opportunity for Creating Tomorrow Trust to expand our network and influence. Since the event, we’ve already been contacted by several organisations from across the country looking for advice and support to improve their inclusive recruitment practices.
Being part of this panel reminded us that every business faces recruitment challenges, but with openness, collaboration, and a willingness to adapt, these challenges can become opportunities, for the business and for the individuals they employ.
We are incredibly grateful to UKWA for inviting us to contribute to such an inspiring event and for creating a space where honest, solution-focused conversations could take place.
Inclusive recruitment is not just a policy, it’s a strategy for success. And seeing so many organisations eager to learn and change was truly energising.
