Why PPE Matters: Bringing Construction Safety to Life for Our Learners

Recently, learners took part in an engaging and informative session focused on safety in the construction industry, led by Ollie, a Civil Engineer from Sir Robert McAlpine. The visit provided a valuable opportunity to explore not just what construction work involves, but how people stay safe while doing it.

Ollie delivered an accessible and interactive presentation on the importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and why it plays such a crucial role in keeping everyone safe on construction sites. For our learners, understanding safety in real-world environments is an essential part of preparing for future pathways, whether that leads to employment, further training, or building independence and awareness.

During the session, learners were introduced to the construction industry as a whole, looking at how the surrounding environment is shaped and developed. Ollie talked through some of the machinery learners often see in everyday life, from diggers to cranes, explaining what they are used for and even where some of their names come from. This helps learners make meaningful connections between what they see in their communities and the work happening behind the scenes.

Learners also enjoyed hearing about Ollie’s own role as a civil engineer, learning what his job involves and how different roles work together on a construction project. Hearing directly from someone working in the industry brought learning to life and helped learners better understand the variety of pathways available.

A highlight of the session was Ollie sharing insight into a current construction project at the local hospital. This real-life example helped learners understand how large projects are planned, managed and delivered  from early design stages through to completion.

By using a familiar local setting, learners were able to see how construction impacts their own community and how important safety, teamwork and planning are in such complex environments.

The session also explored the hazards present in construction environments and why PPE is essential. Learners discussed the risks workers may face on site and how equipment such as helmets, high-visibility clothing, gloves and boots help protect everyone.

Ollie highlighted the wide range of job roles within the construction industry, including builders, electricians, designers, crane drivers, drone operators, site managers and directors. This helped learners understand that construction is a diverse sector with many different opportunities, skills and interests involved.

Sessions like this play a vital role in helping learners build awareness, confidence and curiosity about the world of work. By learning directly from industry professionals, learners gain insight that goes beyond the classroom and supports informed decision-making about future pathways.

A huge thank you to Ollie and Sir Robert McAlpine for taking the time to visit, share their knowledge and inspire our learners. Experiences like this show the power of employer engagement in education and the positive impact it can have. Well done to Isebrook school and the wonderful careers team working tirelessly to offer these fantastic opportunities to inspire learners.
