Families Support

What Next? What do families need to know?

All young people deserve a bright future - to belong, achieve, contribute, stay safe, and be healthy.

What is transition? It is the move from childhood to adulthood keeping the young person’s needs, aspirations, and wishes at the centre of any decisions made. For young people with special educational needs and disabilities, starting to plan and prepare for this transition into adulthood will build their confidence and help make this period in their lives a positive experience. We appreciate this can be a daunting time for families. All of our Creating Tomorrow education partners have dedicated and trained staff members who can help support you through this time.

Here are some simple tips to help during this time:

  1. Prioritise Their Voice: Ensure that your young person's opinions and preferences are at the forefront. Encourage them to share their thoughts and make it clear that their voice matters most in decisions about their future.
  2. Facilitate Open Discussions: Create a safe space for open discussions where your young person feels comfortable expressing their ideas and concerns.
  3. Support Self-Exploration: Help your young person explore their interests and strengths through various activities, such as volunteering, internships, or hobbies. This exploration can guide them towards a fulfilling path.
  4. Encourage Decision-Making: Empower your young person to make decisions, both big and small. Start with everyday choices to build their confidence, and gradually move to more significant decisions about their future.
  5. Respect Their Choices: Show respect and support for the decisions your young person makes, even if they differ from your own expectations. Offer guidance, but ultimately, allow them the autonomy to choose their path

Within the counties that we operate, there are a variety of colleges offering a range of courses, programs, and qualifications. Please bear in mind transport incurs a cost once the young person reaches the end of year 11.

When applying for a college course, please inform the college if the young person has an EHCP and verify that they meet the entry requirements. It is recommended to arrange a tour in advance, with the young person supported by their family. We also suggest that new providers meet with the young person beforehand to ensure their needs can be adequately met.

We pride ourselves on building strong relationships with further education providers to ensure that all the right people are involved in creating a brighter future for all our learners.
